Penampang: The State level Sugandoi Kaamatan singing competition will be held here on May 25 this year.

The event which will be officiated by Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) President cum State level Kaamatan Celebration Committee Chairman Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan will be held at the Hongkod Koisaan hall starting from 6pm.

KDCA Supreme Council member cum Organising Committee Chairman Jeoffrey Ekol said this in a press conference at KDCA on Tuesday.

According to him at this year's Sugandoi event the 10 Sugandoi finalists will be asked to sing new songs created by the State level Sugandoi Kaamatan 2013 committee.

"There will be two songs with one song newly composed by our committee."

He said this is in line with KDCA's goals to promote Kadazan Dusun via songs and to encourage local song composers to compose new Kadazan Dusun songs.

He said there will be three categories; Sugandoi Dazanak (children 13 and under),Songkotoun (veterans) and Kaamatan.

"The closing date for registration will be May 17 for Dazanak, May 18 for Songkotuon.

Ten finalists will be chosen for Dazanak, seven for Songkotuon and 10 for Kaamatan.

He said the prizes for the best new song award for the popular song category are RM500, RM400 and RM300 for the top three placings.

"The prizes for Dazanak category are RM1,000 followed by RM800 for second and RM600 for third. Similarly for the Songkotoun category it is RM1200 for first place, RM1000 for second, RM800 third and RM 300 for the popular choice.

"For the Kaamatan category the first place winner will receive RM6,000, second place RM4,000, third RM3,000, the popular choice winner RM300 and 10 consolation winners getting RM600 each.

All will be provided with trophies and certificates except for consolation winners who will only receive certificates.

In addition Jeoffrey said this year, the contestants in all categories will also be awarded sacks of rice as part of their prizes with first prize winners receiving 40 kg of rice, second place winners 30kg, third place 20kg and the rest 10kg each.

Important guests and local artistes can also expect the red carpet treatment at the event.

"For the first time this year the dress theme will be " glamorous night" and we have also four past sugandoi winners hailing from the 1990s to last year who will be asked to perform a medley at the event.

"It is our hope that this will be well received by the crowd as it was based on feedback received and suggestions by the public."

Jeoffrey said ticket charges for the semi finals of the event on May 21 will be RM3 for adults and only those above 12 will be charged, while for the finals the ticket will be priced at RM5 each.

"We are expecting a crowd of at least 5,000 people to turn up for the event.

The organisers will also sponsor the 10 finalists for the competition to record an album based on the new singles they will sing in the competition," he said.

"We want to invite the public especially those from around Penampang to attend this event which is sure to thrill the audience as all the contestants will be sure to give their best at the event," he said.
