120 priority parking bays for ladies at Centre Point

KOTA KINABALU: Centre Point Sabah (CPS) has allocated a total of 120 priority ladies parking bays on six floors of its multi-storey car park to ensure the security of lady shoppers.

Around 20 parking bays on each floor from the first to sixth levels of the car park are reserved for the priority ladies parking zone.

The priority parking bays are located near to the entrance of the complex and payment counter, as well as equipped with brighter lighting and additional CCTVs.

The priority parking zone for ladies was launched by the Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai and Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir here yesterday.

CPS Management general manager Paul Kung said the State Government had shown its concern and respect towards the people, particularly women through its many activities held over the years.

Kung said the idea of the priority parking zone for ladies stemmed from the railway system in Taiwan whereby the middle carriage was marked as a yellow zone by the government to be reserved for women and children to ensure their safety, especially at night.

The reserved carriages were equipped with more CCTVs and patrol by personnel, he added.

Since last year, CPS has begun installing closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) in the cark park that provides 24 hours of security surveillance. The priority ladies parking zone was fully completed in April this year.

Kung said that each floor of the car park was installed with 12 CCTVs, as well as CCTV at each lift lobby and stairwell.

“As the management (of CPS), we do our best in installing these preventive measures,” Kung said, adding that the CCTVs would also serve as a deterrent or warning.

Meanwhile, Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir commended the management for its effort in providing the priority parking bays for women, adding that 1Borneo Hypermall had also offered priority parking zone for lady shoppers.

Abidin also proposed that CPS management reduce its parking rates, as done by the City Hall in cutting the parking rates by 30 per cent recently.

In response to the proposal, Kung said the management would study the suggestion and would do so if it was feasible.

Kung explained that the cost for operating a car park at every shopping complex was different, but it was a proposal that the management would seriously look into.
