KOTA KINABALU: A total of 588 police officers and personnel attached to the State Police Headquarters in Kepayan yesterday cast their votes nine days ahead of polling day for the 13th general election (13GE).

State Police Training Centre (Pulapol) commander Superintendent Mohd Azhar Hamin, who is also state police spokesman for the 13GE, said all those who should cast their votes yesterday were registered voters for Penampang parliamentary and Kepayan state seats.

“A total of 1,191 police officers and personnel are eligible for postal voting and today (yesterday), 588 of them had cast their votes while the rest will do the same on April 30,” he said.

Police Training Centre in Kepayan was conducted smoothly from 8am until 5pm yesterday.

Mohd Azhar, who also voted yesterday, said all of them were requested to cast their votes via the post early as they would be on duty on April 30 when the rest would be voting.

Meanwhile, Sabah Police Air Wing chief Superintendent Shahrudin Taib, 56, who was also among the voters yesterday, said this was the sixth time he voted early through the post as he was always on duty during the general election.

“For me, postal voting is not much different compared to the actual polling day because it gives us an opportunity to cast our votes as we have to be on duty during polling day,” said Shahrudin who hails from Perak but has been working and living in Sabah for 20years.

Another police officer Lance Corporal Hasnol Rizwan Ehsanuddin, 27, said he was excited as a first time voter.

“Actually I was late to register but this time I can fulfill my obligation as a voter even though it is done through postal voting,” he said.
