The Royal Malaysian Police here have launched jet ski patrolling in
this district in an effort to enhance their presence in line with the
High Profile Policing programme.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk
Hamza Bin Taib said jet ski patrolling is relevant in Sandakan as it is
one of the state’s hotspots alongside Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Tawau
and Lahad Datu.
“Like the ‘umbrella operation’, which only
operates in towns, jet ski patrolling was one of the initiatives mooted
by the police to monitor the shore, especially during peak hours,” he
said during the launching ceremony of Crime Awareness Day at Harbour
Mall yesterday.
Through the National Keys Result Area (NKRA) on
crime reduction, the police had and are implementing 29 initiatives or
approaches which are High Profile Policing, Community Policing, Media as
Partners in Crime Prevention, Fight Crime Facebook, Stop and Talk, Meet
and Greet, Feet-on-Street, Rakan Cop, Technology Based Policing and so
forth.
“As for the crime rate index for Sabah contingent from
January 1, 2012 to November 30, 2012, 5,548 cases had been reported and
compared with the same period in 2011 with 6,079 cases reported, we have
achieved a reduction of 8.73 per cent.
“Meanwhile, the rate of
cases solved was 48.97 per cent and street crime at 48.40 per cent which
had achieved the Key Performance Index (KPI) set under the NKRA,” Hamza
said.
In Sandakan, from Jan 1 to Nov, there were 592 cases
reported and compared with the same period in 2011 with 612 cases
reported, this showed a reduction of 3.27 per cent, he added.
Commenting
on Crime Awareness Day, Hamza said one of the purposes of the programme
is to strengthen the ties between the police and community.
In
addition, the police can also increase their knowledge and exposure to
the public to better understand the behavior patterns of crimes around
them, thus providing more insight on crime prevention.
Through
this programme, a networking between the community and police will be
created, which would facilitate the dissemination of crime information.
The ceremony was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman and attended by some 5,000 local residents.
