Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai has called for proper
measures to be put in place to safeguard users, particularly children
from the possible dangers of the Internet as internet adoption
accelerates and accessibility increases both at home and in schools.
He
said although the government was aware that technology acts as an
important enabler and platform to deliver the inclusive national
transformation it desired, there was a need to ensure a family-friendly
and safe internet experience.
“The Internet can enrich our
knowledge but at the same time, uncontrolled use of the internet might
lead to cyber crimes that target children,” he said when launching the
first DiGI CyberSAFR workshop at Sekolah Menengah Sains Kota Kinabalu in
Luyang, near here yesterday.
More than 500 students and 100
educators from 31 schools in Sabah gathered at the school to learn how
they could protect themselves against cyber crimes as part of the
nationwide DiGi CyberSAFE programme.
As such, Yee said there was a
need for strong public-private partnerships as well as a concerted
effort amongst government agencies, civil society and the media at both
the state and federal government levels.
He said the DiGI
CyberSAFE programme was a good example of a strategic partnership that
helped
address the important national issue of online child safety. —
