More flyovers are on the cards to resolve traffic congestion along the main roads in this fast growing capital.
Deputy
Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said flyovers were the
best option in resolving the traffic jams at main intersections around
the city as road broadening had done little to ease congestion.
“We
are aware of the urgency to resolve the traffic problem in the city,”
said Pairin, who is the State Infrastructure Development Minister.
Pairin said his ministry had conducted research on the effectiveness of flyovers.
He
said these were being planned at the Tuaran-Kelombong intersection in
Jalan Tuaran, also at the Jalan Penampang-Jalan Lintas and Taman
Kingfisher-Yayasan Sabah intersections.
Worsening traffic during peak hours in the city was an issue at the recent state assembly sitting.
Studies have shown that the number of vehicles on the road has increased two-fold.
Sabah
Public Works Department director Datuk John Anthony said the department
had identified seven critical junctions here for the flyovers.
He said at least two would be built next year and the others later.
“It will take about 24 months to complete,” he said, adding that the projects would be Federal-funded.
