The chairman of BIMP-EAGA Malaysia Business Council Datuk Roselan
Johar Mohamed has described last Thursday’s runway blackout at the Kota
Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) as a valuable lesson for all.
Without
finger pointing at anybody, he hoped this incident would not happen
again as “Sabah is aiming and bracing to become air transportation hub
for the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines-East Asean
Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA)”.
However, Roselan, who has been
instrumental in highlighting the issues relating to the needs to enhance
air connectivity in this region, said the party concerned should
sincerely accept criticism with an open heart, in view of the
seriousness of the runway blackout, for the good of the people, the
state and the country.
“The recent blackout is something that
should not have happened, if constant inspection and supervision had
taken place at regular intervals.
“Even if they had seen no wrong,
it still needs to be checked and inspected thoroughly. They normally
call this as service maintenance work,” he told Bernama, here today.
Roselan
said the trouble with big government-linked corporation is “they tend
to take things for granted and that all is going to be forever well”.
He
said: “If they think that service maintenance is expensive, try
accident. This blackout is an accident of untold disaster, not to
mention loss of face or reputation to the nation”.
“They have to
do something about it. We cannot let this thing pass away quietly.
Somebody has to take responsibility. KKIA was supposed to be run by
professionals and this time they slipped up,” he said.
Apparently, the incident has evoked the ire of many people in Sabah, not only the affected passengers but also state leaders.
Among
them was member of Parliment for Putatan Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh who
suggested that Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha failed as Transport Minister and
should resign over the two-night blackout of the runway lights at KKIA,
here on Thursday and Friday.
Mojigoh was quoted, in a local
newspaper yesterday, as urging Kong to go to the ground and see for
himself the problem that had caused the blackouts along the runway of
the international airport, which is the second busiest in the country.
On
Saturday, Kong called for an investigation into the runway blackout,
adding that he was extremely upset with the whole situation that had
caused a lot of uneasiness and anger among passengers who had planned
their long weekend to celebrate Aidiladha with their families and loved
ones.
The Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) was quoted as saying on
the same day (Saturday) that the KKIA runway lights blackout resulted in
diversion, delay and cancellation of 51 flights on two nights,
affecting a total of 6,000 passengers.
However, it was declared
safe for commercial night flight operations at 9.30pm on Friday,
following the installation of new cables and runway lighting coupled
with the provision of a back-up runway circuit
