KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah has proposed the setting up of a Strategic Research Centre for the state.
The centre, he said, will function as a reference centre for all things pertaining to Sabah, including the state’s history and sovereignty in Malaysia, legislation, security and international relations.
Speaking at the premier talk by former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad, Dr Mohd Harun said that the centre will also conduct research on issues of boundaries of the country and islands found in Sabah’s surrounding waters.
The centre will also look into Sabah’s role in determining the economic stability and socio-political outlook of South East Asia, he said.
According to Dr Mohd Harun, the proposal for the research centre stemmed from UMS’s concern towards current issues such as the intrusion in Lahad Datu.
“It is also our commitment to put UMS as an institution that is always relevant in its contribution to the country’s development and security,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, who is also UMS’ Pro-Chancellor said that the state government and people in Sabah are always grateful to Dr Mahathir because the university was his brainchild and vision.
“Reflecting on UMS’ history, its setting up was announced by Dr Mahathir on November 24, 1994 in Beaufort. What we have now is proof of the ‘kata dikota dan janji di tepati’ principle of Dr Mahathir and the federal government in establishing a local university that has to date, produced 30,000 graduates,” he said.
According to Musa, UMS has done well and scored many successes that have made Sabahans proud.
He disclosed that UMS is the first university in Malaysia to implement the ‘EcoCampus’ concept with its strategic location amidst Sabah’s natural wonders and it has also been awarded the title of Most Beautiful University in South East Asia.
