The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) tasked to investigate Sabah's
immigrant problem has been given a six-month extension to come up with
its findings.
RCI secretary Datuk Saripuddin Kasim said the Yang
diPertuan Agong had consented to extend the term of the Commission from
March 21 to Sept 20.
The extension would enable the completion of investigations and compiling the report, he said yesterday.
On
June 1 last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced
the setting up of the RCI to investigate the long-standing problems
related to illegal immigrants in Sabah.
He added that the Government was committed to resolving the issue which could affect the well-being of the people in the state.
Najib
had insisted on the setting up of the RCI and had on Sept 21 handed
over the appointment letters to the RCI chairman, former Chief Judge of
Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Steve Shim Lip Kiong and other commission
members.
