Education: Institute scraps two irrelevant courses

The irrelevancy as well as the lack of job opportunity of two courses conducted at the Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN), resulted in both to be replaced by a course on hospitality.
Program Gerbang Kerjaya

IKBN director  Rosdi Sokri disclosed this during the launching of the ‘Program Gerbang Kerjaya’ yesterday where trainees of the institute were afforded with the opportunities to undergo interview sessions with several government and private agencies, including Jobs Malaysia Centre Sabah, Sabah Forest Industries Sdn Bhd, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd, Telekom Malaysia, Mizuho Precision Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, Public Mutual, CIMB Wealth and Handy Corporation Sdn Bhd.

Describing the issue as long standing, Rosdi said the institute had forwarded a proposal to the Ministry of Sports and Youth to review the relevance of conducting the audio visual and electronic courses at the institute’s branch campus in Sabah.

“Even though the demand for the two courses is good, but many trainees who have passed out from the institute with qualifications in either one have not been able to secure jobs. “We have submitted a proposal to replace both courses with a course on hospitality as it provides more job opportunities in the state,” he said.

He also expressed hope for the ministry to thoroughly consider the proposal since it involves the future of the youths.

Commenting on the marketability of their trainees, Rosdi said 75 per cent of the 2011 trainees had secured jobs in the respective fields they were trained in, adding that each intake is limited to 250 students due to the limited space available in the workshops.
