Sewing their way out of poverty

Many young Sabahans, especially from the rural areas, venture into the city to look for jobs.

In most cases, they end up working as shop assistants, in sales, coffeeshops and such places because of their low education.

Although there is nothing wrong with such occupations, they are mostly shunned because they pay relatively little.

Most young school leavers are now more interested in acquiring skills to make a better living but it’s not easy — and only the determined and diligent are not afraid of learning through trial and error.

The 1Azam programme, therefore, is a boon to these individuals, especially when they are taught living skills and not merely given facilities they would otherwise not know how to use.

Jainab: Youths will get ample jobs if not choosy

To get or apply a job what kind of criteria most people will look at?

Jobs in Kalimantan opportunity to youths

Assistant Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Pang Yuk Ming urged youths to look out for new markets in Kalimantan, Indonesia, which is could become a gold mine within 10 years due to rapid development of oil palm plantation there. He believe Kalimantan has a huge population and stronger economy compared to Sabah with the opening of many plantations. 

The indirectly situation opens up golden opportunity for Sabah youths to explore the huge market there such as becoming distributor of products. The distance between Tawau and Kalimantan compared to Jakarta is nearer and the products can be brought in from Tawau faster. He also mention that those who prepared the best business working paper plan would be brought to visit business opportunities in Kalimantan and China. 

Datuk Pang said all the opportunities when chairing the Youth-Economy Forum committee formation meeting. Datuk Pang hoped next forum, which is schedule for next year would be a platform for youths interested in business.

Hope locals get the opportunity business that State government already plan for next year. It is good if our youths can explore more job opportunity out there. But, if within 10 years Kalimantan economy stronger compare to Sabah, I think and I hope all PATI will be send to work there.

Musa: Sabah as the country's major producer of crude palm oil (CPO)

The TSH Biotech laboratory produced high quality of oil palm ramets and will provide huge boost for Sabah as the country's major producer of crude palm oil (CPO). The high quality oil palm ramets could triple palm oil yields. The laboratory had also provided some 250 local people job opportunities. 

Many oil palm players have spoken of biotechnology in the Sabah oil palm sector but only a few have invested their resources into the untapped field. CM said TSH should be commended for their foresight over 10 year ago in addressing land scarcity while improving planting materials for better productivity and yields Local oil palm players such as TSH had shown their commitment to the local economy and community. TSH executive chairman Datuk Kelvin Tan hoped to enjoy the 50% power rebate from SESB. 

• RM40m invested
• 2011, 70,000 sq  ft tissue culture laboratory was now on track to produce 500,000 Wakuba ramets  
• Gradually increasing to 1.5m by the year of 2015.
• 30% of the country's oil palm are planted in Sabah

Hope TSH research will produce high quality ramets that can increase palm oil yields. Hope TSH also can provide more job opportunities to local.

Sabah Jobless and State Government Programmes

Recording to Datuk Jainab Ahmand the Assistant Minister of  Resource Development and Information Technology, currently  Sabah unemployment rate is 5.6%. Government has taken  several measures to reduce the unemployment rate.

• Conducting job placement programmes (3P)
• Open job interviews at all Labour Department Offices   all over Sabah 
• Encourage locals to work in plantations 
• Jobs placement through Job M'sia Portal

Achievement:

In 2011, 

• 1,452 job seekers across the state were successfully  emplaced through 3P programme
• 3,248 people through open interview programme
• 451 people through programmes that encourage local  workers to work in plantations
• 992 people through the Jobs M'sia Portal

  

Department of Human Resources Development and Sabah Job Centre also organize exhibitions and career guidance programs to provide opportunities for youths to get information on jobs and how to face interview.

Register in Sabah Job Centre: 23,079 (since 2007)

Sabah Labour Department : managed to secure employment   for 5,115 job seekers comprising 563 graduates and 4,552 non graduates.
