Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day sales doubled

The state-level Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day celebration this year recorded a sale of around RM2 million, doubled than that of last year.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Yahya Hussin said the targeted number of visitors was 50,000 and the five-day event could have achieved 100,000 visitors if it were not for the rains.

Yahya, who is also the Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, said in this in an interview after officiating at the closing ceremony of the celebration yesterday.

He suggested his ministry submit a proposal to the State Government for a bigger site, not only for the celebration, but also serves as a market for farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen.

Yahya said the celebration was becoming bigger year after year, with the operators and farmers being more developed.

Hence, a specialized place such as the one used by Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen’s Day, Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (Maha) in Serdang, Selangor was needed.

More funds for Sabah to meet rice needs

Sabah will be more self-sufficient in rice production following a boost in funding of RM5.8bil for the agricultural sector in Budget 2013.

Sabah has been lagging in rice sufficiency, and it was importing up to 70% of the state's rice needs despite several attempts to improve the situation, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya Hussin.

“Some states in the peninsula produce about 80% for their domestic consumption. We have a long way to go,” he said yesterday.

Yahya, who is State Agriculture and Food Industries Minister, said the move to make Kota Belud one of Malaysia's major padi cultivation centres would create new jobs and economic opportunities for the district.

Kampung Binowou Tengah grateful to govt for constructing new bridge

The residents from seven villages around Kg Binowou, Keningau have expressed their gratitude for the concern shown by the government to build a new semi-concrete bridge to replace the old bridge, which was made of round logs, to facilitate the users who are mostly farmers.

Yahya: Ministry focus on food production next year

DCM cum Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Datuk Haji Yahya Hussin, ministry main focus for next year will be to empower the structural support involved in the production of food, especially rice. 

Ministry has been allocated with a total of RM132m in the next year fiscal year out of which RM40.78m will be set  aside for the Agriculture Department. Ministry would focus more towards improving the agricultural sector by empowering its structural support involved in food production. Ministry also will place more emphasis on the production of rice. 

The assurance by the Government that the supply of rice is sufficient, that doesn't mean we are in a comfort zone. Government can't forecast what will happen in future. May be a food crisis or any crisis can happen. 

Hope the ministry project will success. This is a good news for food production industry, hope more locals (from bottom to top) will involve the project.
