There is still no forthcoming decision from the relevant ministry on the use of parabolic satellite dishes in the country.
Resource
Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai
said he feels this lack of progress is hampering the state’s effort to
reduce information and digital gap between Sabah, Sarawak and the rest
of the country.
“For a country to move forward, how can we
restrict the use (of parabolic discs)? In Sabah, there is a real need
because of the lack of necessary infrastructure, hence the gap,” he told
reporters yesterday.
He said the people have the right to receive
satellite signals via parabolic discs as this would enable them to have
access to information.
“The parabolic dish issue should be
resolved…this is absurd – imposing a rule whereby the people can only
use a parabolic dish of a certain dimension. This is creating monopoly
and we should not allow that,” he said.
He added that where ICT
was concerned, everyone should have equal opportunity to cyber space and
that such a restriction prevented the people from moving forward.
At
the same time, he also said Deputy Information, Communication and
Culture Minister, who was here in Sabah last year, should stop talking
nonsense when the deputy minister said his ministry did not prohibit the
use of parabolic dishes.
“We all know that under the present law,
when an individual applies for a licence to use a parabolic dish, it
will not be approved and when one does not have a licence, action can be
taken against him or her for using a parabolic dish. Such a situation
is unacceptable,” he said.
During the interview, Yee also shared
his dismay over the possibility that the state may not be able to
achieve 50 per cent broadband penetration by the end of this year,
saying that the present broadband penetration was 34 per cent.
Earlier, Yee attended a press conference on Texpo Asia 2012 that would be held for the first time in Sabah.
The event would act as a platform to generate ideas and help in business development among entrepreneurs in Sabah.
The
organising chairman of the event Alvis Loo said Texpo would be held on
November 28 and 29, and would provide skills workshop and seminars as
well as business exposition.

The main advantage of a parabolic antenna is that it has high directivity. I
ReplyDeleteIt functions similarly to a searchlight or flashlight reflector to direct the radio waves in a narrow beam, or receive radio waves from one particular direction only.
